Hey everyone,

The last few weeks for men’s crew have been successful. Two weekends ago, the team traveled to Dexter Oregon for the Covered Bridge Regatta where the winning began this year for the Vikings. The Varsity 8 placed first above UofO, HSU, WWU (B), and LC respectively. The Varsity 4 raced in the Championship 4+ race putting them up against UW’s top 4+, OSU’s top 4+ and LC. They took 3rd behind UW and OSU beating out their top competitor in their division, LC. The JV 8 raced along side the Varsity 8 taking a 4th place finish getting edged out in a sprint against HSU. The Novice 4 took second in their heat, a great race for a boat that hasn’t rowed together more than a few times. The Novice 8 took third in their race after over an hour delay due to extreme wind conditions causing multiple boats in prior races to flip. Overall a great day for the Viking men.

We pushed on the following week and hosted Seattle University for a friendly competition day on Lake Whatcom April, 20th. Although the water on Whatcom was very rough, it still held for great racing. Seattle U put together an 8+ that went up against WWU’s V8 and JV8. WWU’s V8 took first in both races with SU trailing and the WWU JV8 close behind in third. We all then did a series of 4, 500m sprints with all boats lined up. Six boats wide, SU 2, WWU V4+, SU 4+, SU4+, WWU 8+, and WWU N8+ sprinted it out four different times for 500m in white capping waters. The WWU mixed 8 prevailed with the N8 and V4 close behind followed by SU. It was a fun day and a great chance to hang out with another team. We plan on making this an annual duel so look forward to this event next year!

The team is now preparing for the WIRA (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) championship in Sacramento, California. This year the team is breaking away from only racing the fours and decided to make the move into racing in the Varsity 8. The Varsity 8 has been training hard together all year and is hoping to make an exciting debut at WIRA’s. Along side the V8 will be the Novice 4 and the Light Weight 4. Final lineups are being decided early this week and we will all be driving down thursday morning! We would love to see any of you there!
