The 2010-2011 Season

Western Men’s Crew is very excited to start the upcoming 2010 Fall season!  Things are already getting started with some pre-season fundraising efforts spearheaded by the team’s President, Matt Reider, along with the contributions of members of the team.  This Fall season will see some changes for the team, namely in the coaching staff.

Josh Griesse has stepped down from his role as Head Coach after generously volunteering his time to the team for six years, three of which as head coach.  His knowledge and passion was greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing him at the occasional practice and cheering us on at regattas.  Taking Josh’s place will be former Novice Coach, Jack Marolich, who will be going into his third year coaching.  After rowing four years for the Vikings, Jack continued to stay involved in the sport by coaching at the collegiate level in Connecticut followed by junior and master level coaching in Sammamish before joining the Vikings once again for the 2009-2010 season.  He looks forward to the opportunity and challenge of taking the Head Coach position and is eager to get the team on the water and working towards a successful season.

Joining the coaching staff will also be 2010 UW graduate and four year rower, Kit Culbert.  Kit, originally from Kirkland, was the stroke of a successful UW freshman eight and later went on to win the PAC-10 and IRA Championships in the varsity four.  Wanting to stay on the water, Kit spent his summers rowing in Boston where he trained and tried out for the U23 lightweight team.  Kit has a long-term goal of collegiate coaching and thinks that his time spent at Western this coming season will help prepare him for a career in the sport.  The team is excited to learn from Kit’s wealth of racing experience and benefit from the new perspective that he brings into the program.  Kit will be joining the team as the Novice Coach, in addition to a fifth-year, Jason Syms.

Jason Syms competed for the Vikings for four-years, medaling at WIRA’s three consecutive years in the varsity four.  He has raced across the country at national level regattas, including a trip to the Dad Vail Championships and two trips to the ACRA National Championships.  Jason is continuing his education at Western with hopes of attending grad-school next Fall.  There is no doubt that the team will benefit from Jason’s experience with the Vikings and enthusiasm for the sport.  He will be joining the team as the Assistant Coach.

The team is hitting the ground running and can’t wait to start building the foundation to a strong Spring racing season!!
